The City of Sioux Falls announced upcoming road work and a public open house for planned Benson Road improvements, along with several street closures and lane restrictions in Sioux Falls and the surrounding area, in an update published October 16.

The City and the South Dakota Department of Transportation are planning improvements to West Benson Road between I-29 and Westport Avenue beginning in 2027, according to the announcement. The open house is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. in room 2510 of the Sanford Pentagon, 2210 W. Pentagon Place. City and state transportation staff and the city’s design consultants will be available to answer questions, and there will be no formal presentation, the City said.

The state plans concrete driving-lane, curb and gutter, sidewalk and traffic-signal improvements within the I-29/Benson interchange, while the City plans to reconstruct West Benson Road between the interchange and North Westport Avenue, the announcement said. Construction is anticipated to start in early 2027, with substantial completion in fall 2027 and final completion scheduled for summer 2028, weather permitting, according to the City.

The roundabout at 271st Street and 472nd Avenue is scheduled to close beginning Tuesday, October 20, for water-main work. North- and southbound traffic will detour to Minnesota Avenue, and east- and westbound traffic to I-229; reopening is anticipated by the end of October 22, weather permitting, the announcement said.

Beginning Monday morning, October 19, the eastbound lane of West Pineridge Drive will close between North Holbrook Avenue and North Marion Road for utility work, with traffic detoured to West Teem or West Madison streets. The work is expected to be completed by the end of October 22, the City said.

The outside eastbound lane of East Benson Road, from North Minnesota Avenue to North Fourth Avenue, is scheduled to close starting October 19 for sidewalk installation. One eastbound lane will remain open, westbound traffic will be unaffected, and access to businesses, homes and side streets will be maintained. The work is anticipated to take one week, weather permitting, according to the announcement.

Starting at 8:30 a.m. October 20, parking will be restricted on East 12th Street between South Highland and South Chicago avenues for utility work. Two-way traffic will shift to the south side, and the work is expected to finish by the end of October 21, the City said.
