What the measure does
Today, the South Dakota Constitution says that a person must be a United States citizen to vote in state elections. This would add people who are not U.S. citizens to the Constitution’s list of people who cannot vote. The state explanation says this clarifies the citizenship rule already in the Constitution.
What the result means for Sioux Falls
A yes vote means the Constitution would expressly list people who are not U.S. citizens as not eligible to vote in state elections.
What happens next
These results are unofficial. They become final when election officials certify them at the canvass, and totals can still change a little as remaining mailed and provisional ballots are counted.
