Raised near Lester, he graduated from high school there in 1954 and went on to farm in that area with his wife of many years until 1999, when the couple moved to Rock Rapids. He was active in his Apostolic Christian church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and song leader, and he valued family time above nearly everything. He retired from farming in 2011 and kept helping on the farm for years afterward.
