The University of Sioux Falls Athletics Department announced Oct. 28 that head softball coach Tommy Downs will also serve as director of flag football development and recruiting for the university’s women’s team in Sioux Falls. The Cougars are scheduled to begin competition in spring 2028, during the 2027-28 academic year, the department said.

Downs will continue as USF’s head softball coach, which will remain his primary responsibility, according to the announcement. In his additional role, he will lead early recruiting efforts, build relationships with prospective student-athletes and coaches, and assist with the program’s early development.

The department said Downs will identify and evaluate prospective players, coordinate campus visits, and work with athletics administrators and university admissions staff on planning and operations. USF is continuing its search for the women’s flag football program’s first permanent head coach, the announcement said.

The announcement did not give a date for the start of recruiting or identify a playing venue.
