Augustana University expanded its Government & International Affairs Department to offer four majors in Fall 2026, the university said in an announcement published Oct. 15. The department is at Augustana’s Sioux Falls campus, according to the announcement.

The department’s former government and international affairs major transitioned to political science, and the university added American politics and policy, global politics, and legal studies, according to Augustana. Political science covers fundamental concepts in politics and political institutions; the other majors focus on U.S. politics and policymaking, political systems and relations between countries, and the American legal system, respectively, the university said.

The new structure includes courses such as Political Ideologies, Introduction to Legal Studies and Introduction to Public Policy, and each major requires a senior capstone, according to Augustana. The university said students also have opportunities to pursue internships in Sioux Falls, Washington, D.C., or globally.

Augustana said the majors are intended to prepare students for fields including diplomacy, local or state government, policy analysis, international organizations and law. Students can learn more about the department at augie.edu/GIA, the university said.
